Ice Road Truckers part 3

READ THIS BEFORE YOU LEAVE A COMMENT

If someone contacts you saying they are Aaron, from this blog, and they talk about helping you with ice road employment. Hang up the phone, don't answer the email. It isn't/wasn't me.
Do NOT leave your email or telephone number in the comments. It will get deleted.
Just watch the show, have a beer and relax.
~cheers

Now I'm getting emails from people asking how to get a driving job up in Canada and how much they make. This is amusing. I know nothing about what is going on up there except what Ive seen on the show. [ice road truckers] But in my hearty wisdom and keen … keenness i give you the answer..

The answer is. $30,000. That is how much you will make. They will make more. You might even make less than 30,000, cause your a rookie.

Now I will tell you how to get a job up there. This is derived from the deep well of experience i have derived from my 58 years of truck driving AND the numerous awards and nominations for my various Hollywood films.

First, to start the application process you have got to put a little more effort into your research than leaving an email address and telephone number in the comments section of this here blog.

Try contacting
BHP billiton ekati diamond mine
Or Tli Cho Landtran
Or Nuna logistics
Look at the bottom of this post for commenter's advise also.

Tell them Aaron the Truck Driver sent you and will get special treatment. If they ask who that is just mention www.road82.com. If you show up in Yellowknife with road82.com tattooed to your fore head you will get double pay and free beer at all local bars. Its something the locals do.. don't ask.

Now for the wisdom part.
From watching the first episode of the show, it appears that most Canadian truckers bobtail into Yellowknife. For the U.S. Owner Operator who left a his phone number here. It is over 1300 miles from the border of Montana to Yellowknife. If you can find a load going to the mines originating from the U.S. then I suppose you get paid to drive north. Otherwise you will probably be bobtailing also. That’s 1300 miles with no weight on the rear, in the winter. It’s probably a nice straight 4 lane highway going up to the northern most part of the world. And I bet they plow the roads hourly and you will make record time. In fact you could probably drive the entire way going 80mph. I hear fuel is free in Canada also.
- that’s 2600 round trip bobtail miles at 3 something per gallon.
- I guess thats 10mpg bobtailing.
- $1,400 in fuel just to get there and back.

A years wage in 8 – 10 weeks? I dont think so. Consider maintenance in that weather, getting towed out of ditches, constant trailer problems. Weather.

Now, pick a highway mark out point A and point B. Drop at one end and drive empty back. Non-stop circles. No scales no highway patrol no cars, just you and other trucks. For 10 weeks you get to drive as long as you want.
No rules.
How much money would you make? The point is, these guys are having to open the door to let in -25 degree weather to stay awake! They are doing 30 weeks worth of work in 8. If you could drive non stop in circles for ten weeks.. You could compete with their pay.

The reason it looks so intriguing is not the money. It’s the editing. If it was a gold rush there would not be so many rookies every season!!!. Its long hours and just as monotonous as driving on paved road. After 4 or 5 runs you would be just as grumpy and tired as if you were driving on pavement. It’s actually not that deadly compared to crabbing (see - “The Deadliest Catch” ) where one person dies a week on average.
Yeah its money, but if they were to edit it differently it might not look so enticing.

My advice… fly to Yellowknife. And bring your winter coat.
When all else fails, come back to the trucking blog for more entertainment, maybe someday I will travel to exotic places and show you what its like to drive on ice, or drive in Australia or.......

*edit* july15th I noticed Trinity Transport on the side of the truck one truck. You could ask them if they need drivers?

fascinating insight but now i cant get this image out of my head.

I get the tattoo done, memorize every one of your posts and films (incase questioned by suspicious locals), packed an extra pair of socks in case it gets chilly and bobtail the thousands of miles up to there from say Montana or Texas or Paris or somewhere.....

And the guy on the gate says "OK genius wheres yor trailer"

Anon, i predict the top guy will make less than $50,500.
I also predict that the Canadian dollar will be of equal value to the U.S dollar by the end of the show.

Mike, thanks for the compliments, ill check out your blog

Lyndon. GO NORTH!! Stop when you see a lake. Then grab a shovel and start digging, there are diamonds beneath your feet!

Aaron, have you seen some of the, well, for the lack of a better description - JUNK that they are driving? Alex - buy some new seat cushions fer cryin' out loud. I don't care if they change air compressors daily - ten and fifteen year old trucks are going to have buildup in the air valves - and the o-rings are going to age. And that is just the air systems!

I realize the show has picked a bunch of "characters," and there are a lot of newer rigs running, but still - I wouldn't drive that equipment if everything was sunshine and lollipops!

I don't think I could handle driving 15mph for hours on end, either. I think the only smart one is the kid who runs the big shovel in the off season - he takes his time, has a newer truck, and doesn't get too excited.

As for the people wanting you to hook them up with one of those jobs - your google-fu is poor, grasshoppers.

Sadly mistaken, lets start with the 4 lane highway direct to Yellowknife. UMM NO look at a map, its 2 lanes 1 in each direction for the last 900km or so, the last 100km isnt even paved. The dollar figures, lets just say grossly under reported. How do I know this, I live in YK (14yrs) Jay, good friend of mine. Hugh and Alex, drinking buddies. Perhaps you were led to believe these things because we dont want all you southern superstars crashing allover our iceroads. Most of what the show tells you is true. I work a 2 on 2 off rotation at one of the diamond mines featured in the show and drive the ice road on my weeks off. Today its -61*C with windchill thats -76*F ish. Just like CNN you only know what they want you to. Pavement Queens need not apply, dont for a second think its easy money.

Just curious - why don't the drivers use GPS to stay on the road during whiteouts and blizzards?

Hey Anonymous (three above this post "Sadly mistaken, lets start with the 4 lane highway direct to Yellowknife...", I'm pretty sure he was using sarcasm! "plow the roads hourly", "drive the entire way going 80mph. I hear fuel is free in Canada also" Come on you didn't pick that up?

Anyway, does anyone else think Hue is getting screwed over on his loads (hauling sewage) and his load counts (2nd time now having to train someone new) because his a-hole of a boss, Kurt, just doesn't like "southern guys" (as truckers from Yellowknife are called up near Tuk)? You can almost hear Kurt saying "No southern boy is going to beat one of our local drivers!" as he gives Hue yet another rookie that he has to spend his time training. In order to best him, Eric has to turn and burn to get 2 loads in one day, while Hue sits STALLED on the road training this new kid. Kurt sure gave Eric just the opportunity that he needed to pull ahead of Hue, by bogging Hue down this kid that failed his test anyway. It completed wasted Hue’s time. What a load of crap! Get it? Anyone??

Anyway, Hue should have went to work for Jerry at Mullen Transportation along with Alex. At least Jerry shows his drivers respect no matter where they’re from.
