Road82 Podcast #5 Pepsi V.S. Dead Bodies

Made a quick recording with the new recorder. I used to make videos often and i would plan them out, they took a lot of time. I was constantly editing. These habits have followed me into the podcast world. I have a show im trying to construct but its taking time. Time to find this that and the other. Edit, edit, edit.

It's going to be great, this next podcast, it will knock your socks off, and your pants too. You will be naked while listening to the next podcast. At least from the waist down. So, If you don't want to be walking around with your pants off in public suggest you listen to it in a closet.

In this podcast:
  • * Added a bit of Led Zeppelin.
  • * Did a update "Trucker Tom Style"
  • * Pepsi load going to Anchorage Alaska. Mt Angel, Oregon to Anchorage Alaska. 2,595 miles via road, barge and road again.
  • * Freightliner air horns SUCk
  • * Blog World Expo
  • * Bodies Exhibit (I saw this in Portland) It was morbid. Plasticized bodies with no mention or traces of the life they lead before they were made into sculptures.
  • * Narrate going though Woodburn Scales
  • * And talk about other things that i can not recall at the moment.
I would like to thank my one and only podcast listener. Ya, i know there are more but this podcast is dedicated to http://gabsatrucker.blogspot.com.

How to make a podcast

I am working on delivering a new podcast solution. In the mean time i will keep Delivering Solutions via this truck. Bleh.. (see past podcasts for the reference on "Delivering Solutions").

An all new Road82 Trucker Podcast Trucking Podcast solution will be delivered by the end of the month.
I'm Waiting for B&H to deliver a trucker podcast digital solution in the mail. Digital recorder that is.

To translate: My Cassette Tape reordered failed on the last podcast so i am going to upgrade a little bit. Something a bit smaller. Something i can use to record truck drivers of the fly, something digital and modern.
If someone approaches you at a truck stop, on the fuel island please smile and answer all my questions. Thank you.

.............................................................................................

I came up with a list of thing i want to do before i die.
  • # Live in Canada for a year.
  • # Work in the Antarctic.
  • # Drive in Alaska.
  • # Haul equipment for a band.
  • # Drive a Tour Bus.
  • # Haul for a logging company.
  • # Go back to hauling scrap metal.
  • # Buy an Airstream trailer and live in it.
  • # And then die.. In 2019

One of these things i will start doing this next spring in 2010. I predict i have about 10 years to do these things before we begin a 3rd world war based on oil, or a water war. Or just your regular old -invade another country because you feel like it- war, or.. until this U.S. empire collapses?

How to Adjust Headlights on a Freightliner with Halogen Lights

When i stated driving a big truck back in 1942 we had headlights, ya know. They were round and had glass on the front. If you needed to adjust em you took a phillips screwdriver and turned a screw on the top, or a screw on the side. The screws were on the outside of the truck.

These lights were probably not "green" enough so now ya get two halogen lamps incased in a plastic housing. These lights work well for the first 200,000 miles. Actually the lights work well past 200,000 miles but that plastic housing has a clear plastic cover over the front. After time the clear goes from clear plastic to gray to yellow to ugly. Mostly due to pitting and weather.

That is why you might be turning your lights on and off in the rain, (at night) thinking, are these things working?

What i used to do myself in 10 minutes now takes an entirely new housing (if you want a light that SHINES). So anyway. I got two new plastic housings on the truck and it took me a while to figure out how to adjust the lights.

Step 1. Open the hood
Step 2. Turn the white plastic screw furthest away from the engine. Left to lower.

You would think that the top screw would raise or lower but that aint so, the screws on the side do that and you have to twist and twist and twist and twist to see a difference.

Pilot car

Someone sent me an email asking what kind of license is needed to drive this vehicle.
-The short squat-y one, not the Freightliner.

Class A? Class B? Class A with passenger endorsement?

Road82 4 Angry Safety Sam

I had a blow-out and ended up with two flat tires last week. We have the The Meritor Tire Inflation System on some of our trailers. After the blow out, one of the air lines inside a rim got torn off. A piece of the tire flipped up and around and took off one of the air lines that branch off that "T" in the center of the hub. (see picture) Two flat tires.. Here are some pictures of a working Meritor Tire Inflation System.

I understand the principals behind the Meritor System but im not sure why all the air bled out of the good tire.

The Road82 Trucker Podcast show notes.

  • # Being late for a delivery. I was not 20 minutes late, i was 11 minutes late. I HATE BEING LATE!
  • # Are we delivering solutions or is it cvalled freight?
  • # Do you know a talkative mechanic? Someone who knows everything about diesel motors? Would he/she like to be on my podcast? If so please tell me his, her name.
  • # I had a blow out, one of many. Talk about retreads and alligators and The Meritor Tire Inflation System.
  • # Safety Sam says do NOT step past the yellow line.
  • # Buy my house (limited time offer)
  • # Safety, what is "safety" How many more rules do we need?

Road82_003_60mph

I recently discovered a guy named Jean Shepherd. He was a radio guy from the 50's, 60's, and 70's. Found him because of a recent show on "Hearing Voices". Hearing Voices is a podcast. I have been listening to his stuff from the 50's over and over. It is sooo awesome! Reminds me of Art Bell without the UFO slant. Besides his references to using a quarter to hit a ball in a batting cage and the references to the dime stores, it is strangely relevant. Listening to old radio is 90 times better than listening to new radio! I added some of the commercials from his show on the podcast. If you want to grab a collection of his old radio shows head here and clear about 13 gigabytes of space on your hard drive.

.........................................................................

The Road82 Trucker Podcast show notes.

  • *What does 60MPH sound like?
  • *Welcome aboard flight three niner niner two.
  • *65,000 ponds of beer equals how many 6 packs of beer? How long would it take to drink all that beer if you drank a 6 pack a day?
  • *What happens to beer after people drink it? Imagine all the stories the people could tell after drinking all the beer in one single trailer (65,000 pounds of beer)
  • *1980 v.s. today v.s. the Internet v.s. TV
  • *Which is more of a waste of time. Watching T.V. or being on the internet?
  • *GPS/cellphone/laptop idea
  • *How to remember any password
  • *Why have i stopped making videos?

The reason the Title of these latest blog posts start with Road82_00X is because iTunes and feedburner have decided to rename the id3 tags no matter how i try to configure the tags on feedburner. It is a podcast/iTunes/audio problem. Sorry it looks so lame. I had to change my user name to Road82 for that reason also.

Road82_002_Chicken

I called Emerald Queen Casino to see how big the auditorium is. If you listen to that last podcast i was talking about Billy Squier playing at a casino compared to playing in arenas back in the day. The call to the casino was kinda lame, i felt like an idiot.
I just realized the Bonneville Salt Flat races are only 15 miles from Wendover, NV. I'm going to ask my boss if i can get a run out there next month for The World of Speed races. I'm on a dedicated route so i doubt they will let me run off for a week but if they do im packing up the bike and going for a ride!
*bike see this post

if you click on this you can see a google map of the tracks on the salt flats.
Pretty cool how they got a picture during a race day

Gi-Gi Roxx talks to herself! I talk about that..
And lastly, an online dating experience.

This is me talking and telling a story or two. Its not just me talking non-stop, i tried to add some stuff to make it interesting, it's 44 minutes long. I think I'm going to make a couple more. If anything, recording the CB should be fun.

Why record? I bought an old Cassette tape recorder and im trying to put it to use. When i was a kid, if you recorded your voice it was called a recording. Now its called a podcast. Whatever it's called it helps pass the time at night trying to think of things to yap about. Here is a list of some of my favorite recordings (podcasts)

  • Dail Source Code I used to listen to Adam Curry's Daily Source Code but he put that on hold. He does a show with John C. Dvorak now called NoAgenda. [link] Adam now believes in any and every conspiracy theory imaginable. They mostly talk about Swine Flu. Two very talented people who are not using their talent. I wouldn't recommend it. Too much loopy, 5th grade reporting on the news and current events.
  • The Kunstler Cast James Howard Kunstler talks about the end of cheap oil and walkable citys. He has a book called "The Long Emergency". Hosted by Duncan Crary. Very colorful and enlightening. [link]
  • This Week In Tech with Leo Laporte [link] [MP3 link]
  • Adam Carolla Podcast [link]
  • Adam Carolla CarCast [link]
  • The Moth [link]
  • Fresh Air [link] I could listen to Terry Gross all day. I like her.

How old am I?

.........................................................................................................
My motored bike

Its a Del Mar Schwinn beach cruiser. That is a chunck of mudflap on the frame and under the u-bolt, helps keep the vibration down. I had a 1/2 gallon tear - drop tank on it but i didn't like it so i made that wooden box and put a gallon sized tank in there. It is gravity fed but i do have a squeeze bulb on the fuel line to get rid of the air that accumulates now and then. That's a 49cc 2 stroke motor with a whopping 5hp. It gets around 90mpg and goes 100mph.

I think its legal... No one has stopped me yet.

I got fired on April 1st

The Aprils Fools Joke was partly true!
I didn't get fired, i quit. The entire time i was there i was job hunting and working on working for someone else. I'll leave the details for another day. All this employment drama is for the birds.
Funny thing is i am making the same i was hauling fuel. Without the...
Without the headaches.
Yes, i am still in a big truck.

With a GPS unit stuffed in my pants!!
________________________________________________________________

Garmin nüvi 850 AM

I bought this Garmin G.P.S. unit to help me find gas stations but ended up relying on it as a MP3 player. GPS MP3 player? Yup. With a 4 gig memory card it's a great way to listen to endless podcast's and or music while driving down the road going to gas station after gas station after gas station.
It can broadcast on any FM radio channel as long as it is clear. Unfortunately the signal it puts out is so meager, it's useless in most city's where every blank station has bleed over.

UNLESS YOU TOUCH THE UNIT ON THE SIDE.

Shift, put elbow on shifter, touch GPS, listen. Shift, put elbow on shifter.... All night long. My arm got tired so i put the GPS in my pants. Now my arm isn't aching from being stretched all night long but i can no longer use the GPS part.
Maybe i need two Garmin and some duct tape.
And an antenna attached to a football helmet.
Ill figure some thing out.
I don't really need the G.P.S. part anyway now. I should duct tape it to my stomach like they do when the put a wire tap on guys, in the movies.

The not-so-good parts (Cons)
  • The unit is inoperable when the USB is plugged into the laptop. The battery can be recharged when plugged into a computer. In fact it charges automatically. While it is plugged in all the normal functions are disabled, you just get a black screen with an image. You can still transfer files but you can't look up an address's or mess around with the GPS or use any of the other features.
  • It is nice that you can recharge it via the USB cable though.
  • You cant delete files! You have to plug the unit into a laptop to delete stuff. So lets say you have a 2 hour radio show in MP3 format and its cut up into 4 segments and you have 6 days of shows. You might want to delete each file after you listen, you have to plug the USB cable in to access the memory card so that you can delete these files.
>> When the Garmin is plugged into the cigarette lighter charger there are no limitations on any the functions, it works like normal <<

Good stuff (Pros)
  • Voice Command. It has an external, separate voice activation device. You can speak the address. It works well.
  • Bluetooth. You can talk on the phone if your cell phone has bluetooth. Guess it would be like talking on speaker phone. I haven't tried it.
  • Alarm clock. Has that
  • Trip Information. Shows Average MPH, Miles per Hour (great for double checking your speed if you have a truck that seems to be going faster or slower than the speedometer reading in your truck), Stopped Time, Total Miles. (Total miles can be reset after each trip, otherwise it just keeps rolling, like an odometer.
  • Solitaire. Has that
  • Touch Screen. Check
  • Truck Routes. Nope. No truck routes.
  • Shortest route v.s. Highway. It has that function and you can change a route by touching the screen. Its easy to add a way point to avoid a road or street.
  • Detour. It has a detour function that, when clicked on will take you to the closest exit and show you how to keep moving on. If you wander off the route the Garmin will recalculate automatically and show you a new route without touching anything.
  • Search local retailers. The Garmin can search for big name businesses. Its easy to find a Wallmart, McDonalds or any big name store. It only searches within a 100 mile radius i think. I was trying to find a Costco 150 miles away and i had to keep trying till i got well out of the city i was in.

No more fuel hauling

Today i got fired.

No more hauling fuel for me. They didn't seem to mind that i put medium grade in the high octane tank. They didn't say anything when i had 2 dome outs at the rack. They didn't even say anything when i called in "sick" for nine days cause i hate this job!

They just fired me!

I find out next friday why i got the Boot.

ughhhh
